What to look for when doing a push up!

“Drop down and gimme 10”

“PROPER ones!!”

The most underrated exercise on the planet, the push up has made a bit of a comeback in the exercise and fitness milieu but it should NEVER have gone out of style.

Place your hands on the floor slightly wider than your shoulder blades elbows facing 45deg back, and set yourself up on your toes.

From here, draw the belly in, inhale and slowly drop yourself down to the point where your chest comes close to the floor, pause for a fraction of a second.  Then, with a good effort, exhale and with a bit more speed push yourself back up without locking out the elbows!

Here is the DO NOT list:

  1. DO NOT let your head sag…(think flat surfboard)
  2. DO NOT let your lower back sag…(think flat surfboard)
  3. DO NOT collapse through the shoulder blades…(think flat surfboard)…Notice the trend?

If the exercise poses a challenge due to leverage issues, then do the push up at a 45- degree angle off a countertop or staircase.  From there you can drop down a couple of inches for added resistance and so on until you end up parallel to the floor!
